Making Music On My iPad With The Korg iMS-20

by Bill Hartzell

I’ve been looking forward to playing around with the Korg iMS-20 app for iPad for quite awhile.   This thing’s a sound designer’s dream.  It includes:

  • analog synth
  • step sequencer
  • drum machine
  • mixer with effects
  • two Koass pads
  • all for only $32!

As soon as I downloaded, I didn’t even bother to read the manual.  I just fired it up and started making some music.  Here’s the very first thing I came up with:
Chromatic Stomp by SoundSavant

As you can hear, not too complex but very cool.  I actually played the chromatic melody using the Kaoss Pad.  Very inspiring. I can tell I’m going to be making lots of exciting sounds sounds and music with this thing.
I haven’t tried it yet but I picked up the Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit which allows you to attach a USB MIDI controller.  I’ll be sure to let you know how things go when I try it out.

Have any of you been using the iMS-20?  Leave me  a comment and let me know.
